What is NoirCode?
NoirCode is a local-first AI coding agent designed to help developers write, understand, debug, and maintain software.
It works directly with your codebase, allowing AI agents to inspect files, execute commands, propose changes, and assist with development tasks. NoirCode supports terminal-based workflows, a desktop application, and web-based interfaces.
How do I get started with NoirCode?
Getting started is straightforward. Install NoirCode, open your project directory, and start a coding session.
You can begin by connecting an AI provider, selecting a model, and describing what you want to build or change.
Do I need a paid AI subscription to use NoirCode?
NoirCode does not inherently require a paid AI subscription.
You can connect locally hosted models through tools such as Ollama or LM Studio, allowing you to run supported AI models using your own computing resources.
You can also connect cloud-based AI providers. Depending on the provider and model, API credentials, a paid subscription, usage-based billing, or other authentication may be required.
NoirCode does not automatically make paid AI models available for free.
Can I use my existing AI accounts or subscriptions?
NoirCode supports integrations with multiple AI providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and GitHub Copilot.
Whether you can use an existing subscription depends on the provider's supported authentication methods, account permissions, and applicable terms.
Some integrations support account-based authentication, while others require an API key or separate billing arrangement.
You can configure providers and select models through NoirCode's model management features.
Can I use NoirCode with local AI models?
Yes. NoirCode supports local model workflows through compatible inference servers, including Ollama, LM Studio, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
Running a model locally can reduce dependence on external APIs and give you greater control over where inference occurs.
Performance and compatibility depend on the model, your hardware, the inference server, and the capabilities required by the agent.
Is NoirCode only available in the terminal?
NoirCode is designed to support several development environments.
You can work through its terminal interface, desktop application, or supported web and editor integrations.
These interfaces can connect to NoirCode's local server, providing access to coding sessions, model configurations, and agent workflows.
Available interfaces and features may vary by release.
Can I run multiple AI agents or coding sessions?
Yes. NoirCode supports multiple coding sessions, allowing developers to organize different tasks and work on separate problems.
Agents can be configured for different responsibilities, such as planning, implementing changes, exploring repositories, or reviewing code.
When running tasks concurrently in the same working tree, users should manage potential file conflicts and coordinate changes appropriately.
Which AI models does NoirCode support?
NoirCode is designed to work with a broad range of cloud and locally hosted models.
Supported provider integrations may include OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen, OpenRouter, Ollama, and LM Studio. The full set is listed in the provider directory.
Model availability depends on the provider, your credentials, and the current integration capabilities.
You choose which provider and model to use rather than being restricted to a single AI ecosystem.
What happens to my code and data?
NoirCode follows a local-first development approach.
Your project files remain in your development environment unless a configured feature or authorized operation transfers information elsewhere.
When you use an external AI provider, relevant prompts, code context, and other information required for the request may be transmitted to that provider.
When you use a locally hosted model, inference can occur on infrastructure you control.
NoirCode's local-first design does not mean every configuration operates completely offline. Privacy and data handling depend on your selected providers, integrations, and settings.
For additional information, consult the NoirCode privacy policy.
Can NoirCode modify files or run commands on my computer?
Yes. NoirCode can use development tools to read files, search repositories, modify code, and execute commands.
These capabilities are governed by configurable permissions and agent settings.
Depending on your configuration, operations may be allowed, denied, or require approval before execution.
You should review permissions carefully, particularly when granting agents access to sensitive files, credentials, or commands with system-level effects.
Is NoirCode open source?
NoirCode is proprietary software. It is the intellectual property of Hira Barton, with Noir Stack LLC serving as its authorized commercial licensee and distributor.
